The Quagga was a subspecies of the Plains ZEBRA that lived in South Africa until it became extinct in the late 19th century. It was distinguished from other zebras by its unique stripes, which were much more limited than those of other zebras and only covered the front half of its body. The Quagga was hunted for its meat and hide, and its population declined rapidly until it was declared extinct in 1883.
