Writer Shelby Steele is an American author, columnist, documentary film maker, and a Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Senior Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He is best known for his work on the concept of 'white guilt' and his criticism of contemporary American liberalism. His works include Shame: How America's Past Sins Have Polarized Our Country, White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era, and A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win. Steele has also written several books on race and culture, including The Content of Our Character: A New Vision of Race in America and The Dream Deferred: The Second Betrayal of Black Freedom in America.
