An ESTUARY is a body of water where a river meets the sea. It is a semi-enclosed coastal body of water which has a free connection with the open sea and within which seawater is measurably diluted with freshwater derived from land drainage. Estuaries are typically found in areas where the sea level is rising relative to the land, along much of the eastern coast of North America and in parts of Europe.
