A LANDING is a place where ships can come ashore and unload cargo, while a HARBOR is a sheltered area of water where ships can anchor. BERTH is a space in a HARBOR where a ship can be moored, and MOORAGE is the act of securing a vessel to a DOCK or PIER. A JETTY is a structure that extends from the shore into the water, and a QUAY is a wharf built along the shore of a river or HARBOR. A DOCK is a platform or area of water where ships can be loaded and unloaded, and a PIER is a raised platform extending from the shore into the water. DOCKS are similar to piers, but are usually larger and more permanent.
