MAES stands for Mary and Ellen West and Sarah and Elizabeth Jemison, two pairs of sisters who were pioneers in the American West. Mary and Ellen West were the first white women to settle in what is now the state of Wyoming. Sarah and Elizabeth Jemison were the first white women to settle in what is now the state of Montana. Both pairs of sisters were instrumental in establishing settlements in their respective states and helping to shape the culture of the American West.
