He was tasked with investigating the Watergate scandal, which involved the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and the subsequent cover-up by President Richard Nixon's administration. Cox's investigation led to the indictment of several high-ranking officials, including Nixon's chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman.
