Max Ernst was a German-born Surrealist artist who is best known for his pioneering work in the Dada and Surrealist movements. He was born in Brühl, Germany in 1891 and died in 1976 in Paris, France. His works often featured dreamlike imagery and were heavily influenced by his interest in psychology and the unconscious mind. He was also a prolific writer and poet, and his writings often explored the same themes as his artwork. Ernst's most famous works include The Elephant Celebes (1921), Europe After the Rain (1940–42), and The Antipope (1941).
