Novas are stars with fluctuating brightness. They are caused by a sudden increase in the star's luminosity, which can last from several days to weeks. Novas are usually found in binary star systems, where one star is much more massive than the other. The more massive star will eventually consume its companion, causing the nova outburst. Novas are not to be confused with supernovas, which are much more powerful and destructive events.
