The Standard Oil Company was an American oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company founded in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler. It was one of the first major trusts in the United States and was the largest oil refiner in the world at the time. The company was broken up in 1911 by the Supreme Court of the United States due to antitrust violations. One of the companies that emerged from the breakup was the American Oil Company, commonly known as AMOCO.
