The South African War, also known as the Second BOER War, was a conflict fought between the British Empire and the two independent BOER republics of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic from 1899 to 1902. The term 'BOER' is derived from the Dutch word for farmer and refers to the descendants of the Dutch-speaking settlers of the eastern Cape frontier in Southern Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries.
