The term SOUTH AFRICAN CERTAIN is composed of two words: BOER and CERTAIN. BOER is a Dutch and Afrikaans word meaning 'FARMER' and is used to refer to the descendants of the Dutch-speaking settlers of the eastern Cape frontier in Southern Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries. The term CERTAIN refers to the South African CERTAIN Concessions, a set of agreements made between the British and the Boers in 1902 that ended the Second BOER War.
