Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist, author, and conservationist best known for her 1962 book Silent Spring. The book is widely credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Carson's work focused on the effects of synthetic pesticides on the environment, particularly birds, and she argued that the chemicals had a negative effect on the environment and human health. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.
