The ARAL Sea is a formerly large, inland sea located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It has been shrinking since the 1960s due to the diversion of its feeder rivers for irrigation and other uses. As a result, the ARAL Sea has become much smaller, earning it the nickname 'Shrunken Inland Sea'.
