The ARAL Sea is a shrinking lake located in Central Asia, between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It was once the fourth-largest lake in the world, but due to the diversion of its feeder rivers for irrigation, it has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s. The lake has lost over 80% of its surface area and is now divided into two separate bodies of water. The ARAL Sea is an environmental disaster, with the salinity of the water increasing and the surrounding land becoming increasingly polluted.
