The term SGT. York refers to ALVIN York, an American World War I hero who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and leadership in battle. He was born in Tennessee in 1887 and was a conscientious objector before enlisting in the Army in 1917. He led an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking out 32 enemy soldiers and capturing 132 more. His actions saved many American lives and earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers.
