Cannonball Adderley was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. He is best known for his 1966 single 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy', a crossover hit on the pop charts. Adderley was a pioneer in the genre of soul jazz and made numerous contributions to the genre, both as a bandleader and sideman. He was also one of the first jazz musicians to embrace funk and soul music. Adderley's playing style was rooted in bebop but he incorporated elements of blues and gospel into his music. He was an influential figure in jazz and his influence can still be heard today.
