The Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, is an archipelago of over 130 islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, by Captain James Cook in 1778. The islands are the most remote population center on Earth, located over 2, 400 miles from the nearest continent. Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands.
