The ASHCAN School was an American Realist artistic movement of the early 20th century. It was led by a group of artists, including Robert Henri, George Luks, William Glackens, and Everett Shinn, who sought to depict everyday life in New York City. The ASHCAN School's works were characterized by their gritty realism and dark palette. They often depicted the city's poorer neighborhoods and its inhabitants, as well as scenes from the city's parks and waterfronts. The ASHCAN School's works are now considered to be some of the most important examples of American Realist art.
