The ECU is an old five-franc coin that was used in France from 1795 to 1803. It was the first French currency to be issued in decimal form and was made of copper or bronze. The coin was minted in denominations of one, two, five, ten, twenty, and forty francs. The obverse side of the coin featured a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, while the reverse side featured the French Republic's coat of arms. The ECU was replaced by the franc in 1803.
