Enid Bagnold was an English author best known for her novel National Velvet, which was published in 1935. The novel follows the story of a young girl named Velvet Brown and her horse, who together win the Grand National steeplechase. Bagnold wrote several other novels, as well as plays and autobiographical works. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1975.
