A landing stage is a structure built along the shoreline of a body of water to provide access for boats and ships. The most common terms for a landing stage are PIER, QUAY, DOCK, WHARF, and JETTY. A PIER is a raised platform that extends out into the water, usually supported by piles or pillars. A QUAY is a long, narrow platform built along the shoreline, often used as a loading and unloading area for ships. A DOCK is a sheltered area of water where ships can be loaded and unloaded. A WHARF is a large platform built along the shoreline, often used for loading and unloading cargo. A JETTY is a structure built out into the water, usually made of stone or concrete, to protect the shoreline from erosion.
