The House Committee on Ways and Means is a committee of the United States House of Representatives. It is responsible for writing tax laws and overseeing the Internal Revenue Service. The committee also has jurisdiction over other areas such as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment compensation, and other social welfare programs. It is one of the oldest standing committees in Congress, having been established in 1789.
