Allan Nevins was an American historian and journalist who wrote extensively on the Civil War and Reconstruction. He was a professor of history at Columbia University and was the founder of the first graduate school of history in the United States. He was also a prolific author, writing over 50 books and hundreds of articles. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for his work and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.
