The term DVD precursors refers to technologies that preceded the development of the DVD. One such technology is VHS (Video Home System), which was a consumer-level analog video cassette recording and playback system developed by JVC in 1976. Another precursor to the DVD is LaserDisc, a home video format released by Philips and MCA in 1978. LaserDiscs were the first commercial optical discs for consumer use, and they could store up to 60 minutes of video on each side. Both VHS and LaserDiscs were popular formats for home video until the introduction of the DVD in 1997.
