Herb Stempel, notably, was a CONTESTANT on the 1950s game show 'Twenty-One'. He was a graduate student in sociology at Columbia University when he was chosen to appear on the show. He was known for his encyclopedic knowledge and was able to win several games. However, he was eventually asked to throw a game in order to make way for a more charismatic CONTESTANT, Charles Van Doren. Stempel's decision to cooperate with the show's producers led to the uncovering of the quiz show scandals of the 1950s.
