The French Emperor from 1804-14 and 1815 was Napoleon I. He was a military leader and statesman who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. He crowned himself Emperor of the French in 1804 and established the Napoleonic Code, which laid the foundation for civil law in many countries. He was eventually defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and exiled to the island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821.
