The first president of Korea was Syngman Rhee, commonly referred to as Rhee. He was a Korean statesman, the first and last president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, and the first president of the Republic of Korea. He served from 1948 to 1960 and is credited with leading the country through the Korean War. He was also a major proponent of the Korean independence movement.
