The first female Asian-American Cabinet member was Elaine Chao, who served as the 24th United States Secretary of Labor from 2001 to 2009. She was the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to a President's Cabinet in American history. Prior to her appointment, she held positions in both the public and private sectors, including Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation and President and CEO of the United Way of America.
