Destructive 2005 Hurricane Wilma was a powerful tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage and loss of life in the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States. It was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h). Wilma was the twenty-second named storm, thirteenth hurricane, sixth major hurricane, and fourth Category 5 hurricane of the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. Wilma caused an estimated $29.1 billion in damage, making it the second-costliest hurricane in United States history, behind only Hurricane Katrina.
