A volcanic crater is a bowl-shaped depression formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. The two most common types of volcanic craters are calderas and maars. A caldera is a large, circular depression formed when magma is ejected from a volcano and the ground collapses inwards. Maars are smaller, shallow craters formed when magma comes into contact with groundwater and causes an explosion.
