Kwanzaa is a December celebration that was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga. It is celebrated from December 26th to January 1st and is a cultural holiday that celebrates African-American heritage and culture. Kwanzaa is based on seven core principles, which are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. During the celebration, families come together to light the Kinara, exchange gifts, and share meals.
