The core of an atom is known as the NUCLEUS, which is made up of protons and neutrons. Protons have a positive charge, while neutrons have no charge. The NUCLEUS is held together by the strong nuclear force, which is much stronger than the electromagnetic force that holds electrons in orbit around the NUCLEUS. The number of protons in the NUCLEUS determines the element, while the number of neutrons determines the isotope.
