Colonial Massachusetts Governor Thomas GAGE was a British Army officer and colonial administrator who served as the military governor of Massachusetts during the American Revolutionary War. He was appointed by King George III in 1763 to serve as the royal governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, replacing Thomas Hutchinson. GAGE was responsible for enforcing the unpopular Intolerable Acts, which led to increased tensions between the colonists and the British government. He was also responsible for ordering the British troops to march on Lexington and Concord in April 1775, which sparked the beginning of the American Revolution.
