Ara Parseghian was an American football player and coach. He is best known for his coaching career at the University of Notre Dame, where he led the Fighting Irish to two national championships in 1966 and 1973. He also coached at Northwestern University and the University of Miami. His nickname was 'Ara' and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980. He was also a member of the National Football Foundation's Board of Directors. His last name, Parseghian, is an Armenian surname meaning 'son of a lion'.
