Clinton's Big Ditch, also known as the Erie Canal, was a 363-mile long canal built in the early 19th century. It connected the Hudson River to Lake Erie and was a major factor in the development of the United States. The canal was funded by New York State and was completed in 1825. It allowed for the transportation of goods and people between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean, and was a major economic success.
