William Cohen was a member of the Clinton Cabinet, serving as Secretary of Defense from 1997 to 2001. He was the first Republican to serve in that position since Caspar Weinberger in the Reagan administration. Prior to his appointment, Cohen had served as a U.S. Senator from Maine from 1979 to 1997. During his tenure in the Senate, he was a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence.
