He is best known for his 'Great Compromise' of 1850, which helped to avert a civil war. Clay was also known for his orations, which were often delivered in a passionate and persuasive manner. He was given the nickname 'The Great Compromiser' and 'The Great Pacificator'. Clay was also known as 'The Lion of the West' and 'The Great Ali' for his ability to bring together opposing sides.
