Clara Barton, for example, was a NURSE who is best known for founding the American Red Cross. She was born in 1821 and worked as a teacher before becoming a NURSE during the Civil War. After the war, she devoted her life to helping those in need, and in 1881, she founded the American Red Cross. Her work with the organization earned her international recognition and she was awarded numerous honors for her humanitarian efforts.
