The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization of Civil War veterans founded in 1866. It was the first national veterans' organization in the United States and provided support for veterans and their families. The organization was open to all Union veterans who had served in the Civil War, regardless of race or rank. The GAR was active until 1956 and had a membership of over 400, 000 at its peak.
