Clara Luper was an influential civil rights leader in the 1950s and 1960s. She is best known for leading the first successful sit-in at a segregated lunch counter in Oklahoma City in 1958. Luper was also a teacher, mentor, and activist who worked to end segregation and promote civil rights. She was a founding member of the NAACP Youth Council and the Oklahoma City chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality. Luper was awarded the NAACP's Spingarn Medal in 1969 for her work in the civil rights movement.
