Isabel Allende is a Chilean author who has written many novels, short stories, and memoirs. She is best known for her novel The House of the Spirits, which was published in 1982. Allende is the most widely read Spanish-language author in the world and has been awarded numerous awards for her work. She is also the first female Latin American writer to be inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
