Judith Resnik was a Challenger Astronaut who was the first American female astronaut to travel to space. She was a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984 and tragically died in the Challenger disaster in 1986. Resnik was a highly accomplished engineer and held a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland. She was also a lieutenant in the United States Navy.
