Cartoonist William Steig is best known for creating the beloved character Shrek. Steig was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and author of children's books. He was born in 1907 and died in 2003. He won the Caldecott Medal in 1988 for his book 'Crictor'. He was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1976 for his book 'Symbols & Shadows'. His work has been featured in The New Yorker magazine since 1930.
