The capital of West Virginia is CHARLESTON, a city located in the eastern part of the state on the Kanawha River. It is the most populous city in the state and has been the state capital since 1885. The city was founded in 1788 and named after Charles Towne, an early settler. It is home to many historic sites, including the West Virginia State Capitol, the West Virginia Governor's Mansion, and the West Virginia State Museum.
