The capital on the Missouri River is Pierre, a city located in the state of South Dakota. It is the second-smallest state capital in the United States, with a population of around 14, 000 people. Pierre is situated on the east bank of the Missouri River and is the county seat of Hughes County. The city was founded in 1880 and named after Pierre Chouteau, Jr., a prominent fur trader of French-Indian descent.
