California's Old Fort Ord was a United States Army post located in Monterey County, California. It was established in 1939 and served as an active military installation until 1994. The fort was named after Major General Edward Ord, who served in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. It was used for training, mobilization, and deployment of troops during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The fort was also home to the 7th Infantry Division and the 1st Marine Division. In 1994, the fort was closed and the land was transferred to the Bureau of Land Management.
