California's Fort Ord was a U.S. Army post located in Monterey County, California. It was established in 1917 and served as an active military installation until 1994. The fort was named after Major General Edward Ord, who served in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. The fort was used FOR training and mobilization during World War II and the Korean War. After the Korean War, it was used as a base FOR the Army Reserve and National Guard units. In 1994, the fort was closed and the land was transferred to the Bureau of Land Management.
