The British Field Marshal in question is Horatio Herbert Kitchener, who was born in Ireland in 1850 and served in the British Army for most of his life. He was appointed to the position of Field Marshal in 1902, and is best known for his role as Secretary of State for War during World War I. He was also responsible for the recruitment of millions of men into the British Army during the war. He died in 1916 when his ship was sunk by a German U-boat.
