Blackthorn is a shrub or small tree native to Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa. It is also known as Prunus spinosa and is related to the PLUM tree. The fruit of the blackthorn is a small, round, dark purple drupe, commonly called a SLOE. Sloes are used to make jams, jellies, and liqueurs. The wood of the blackthorn is hard and dense, making it suitable for use in walking sticks and other tools.
