Desmond Tutu is a South African Anglican cleric and theologian who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. He was the first black South African Archbishop of Cape Town, serving from 1986 to 1996, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role in the struggle against racial segregation and oppression in South Africa. He is also known for his work as a human rights activist, and has been a vocal advocate for social justice, peace, and reconciliation.
